Anna Bálint – new postdoc

A portrait of a person against a white background.

I’ve come to Lund this fall, having Ronald Kröger as my supervisor. My work will be based on the observation that the rhinaria of many mammals, i.e. the hairless skin areas around the nostrils, show high variability in shape, wetness, skin structure and temperature. Many of these features suggest that the rhinaria might have a sensory function. In active dogs –as in other carnivorians – the nose tips are usually cooler than the ambient temperature and wet. Our aim is to understand the possible sensory functions of the rhinaria in dogs, by means of behavioral experiments, conducted under semi-natural conditions.

I did my PhD work at the Ethology Department of Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary, between 2010-2015. My work focused on the acoustic and visual communicative behavior of dogs. Before that I received an MD from the University of Szeged in 2009.
