Ashish Ahlawat – new PhD student

Portrait of Ashish Ahlawat. Photo.

Greetings fellow researchers! I am Ashish and I have joined Dimitrios Floudas research group this semester as a doctoral student.

I hail from India with the knowledge of most of its cuisine. My undergraduate studies were at the University of Delhi in Zoology. I have studied both chordates and non-chordates during my academic career. After that, I pursued Masters in Biotechnology at IIT Roorkee. For my final Master’s thesis, I had purified and crystallized nsp2 (Non-structural protein) protease from CHIKV (Chikungunya) virus and tested its inhibition using small compounds. Now I have moved to Sweden to start my PhD in the microbial ecology group.

During my PhD, I will use spectroscopic techniques to study decomposition mechanisms in fungi. More specifically I will examine the ability of fungi to degrade the plant cell wall along with observing the structural and chemical changes of cellulose and lignin during this decomposition process.

My hobbies include playing any kind of sport and going for hiking. I am looking to explore the beauty of the Skåne region during my stay here. I also like watching TV shows and movies or go for a run.

This position is an exciting opportunity to dive into innovative research in fungal biology surrounded by experts in their particular fields.
