Marcus Stensmyr – new senior lecturer in animal physiology

A person is standing in a plastic coat in an very old building.

My name is Marcus Stensmyr, and I am newly appointed senior lecturer in animal physiology. I come to Lund from Germany, more precisely, from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, where I have been a group leader for six years. Now I am pleased to be back where I started as student in 1995, and where I also completed my undergraduate studies (in the pheromone group).

My research has since my days as PhD student at SLU Alnarp (under the supervision of Bill Hansson) mostly been focused on the sense of smell of the vinegar fly Drosophila melanogaster. My interest concerns figuring out the functional and ecological significance of the neural and molecular organization of the fly’s olfactory system. In particular, I am interested in dissecting neural circuits underlying innate behaviors in the fly, which is the topic I mainly intend to pursue here in Lund as well. I have however worked on a range of other creatures, ranging from robber crabs (as student and in Jena) to lab mice (as postdoc at Rockefeller University, New York, USA). Working on a number of different organisms is likewise something I plan to continue doing at Lund. Im looking forward to meeting you all!

I like your new lab! Just the cockroaches that are missing.

    Welcome Marcus!

I see from the photo that you are already becoming acquainted with your new office and lab, and are ready for the Lund autumn!

It will be really great to have you with us!

    Warm regards

    Eric

Yes, lab is great. Just needs a bit of cleaning. Good thing though, the flies are already there!
