Katrine Lund-Hansen – new doctoral student

A portrait of a person in a cap.

My name is Katrine Lund-Hansen and I am a new PhD student at the Section for Evolutionary Ecology. I grew up on Fyn in Denmark and got my master in biomedicine at University of Southern Denmark. I did my thesis on asthma susceptibility genes in a Danish sib-pair population. I am under shared supervision between Jessica Abbott here in Lund and Ted Morrow at the University of Sussex and am going to spend an equal amount of time at the two universities.

The focus of my PhD will be on sexual antagonism and sex chromosome evolution. This will be studied through a female-limited X-chromosome evolution experiment, which will investigate the role of sexual antagonism in maintaining standing genetic variation on the X-chromosome, and a sex chromosome replacement experiment that will quantify coevolution between the sex chromosomes. For both experiments I will use Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism.

Meet Pablo Salmon – new doctoral student in the Life History group

En person står i en trappa.

My name is Pablo Salmon, a new PhD student in the Evolutionary Ecology unit. I grew up in Bilbao, a medium-size city in the North of Spain, but I performed my master studies in Evolutionary Biology in the Complutense University of Madrid. In my master thesis I studied the costs of reproduction in the spotless starling (Sturnus unicolor). Here in Lund under the supervision of Dr. Caroline Isaksson and Professor Staffan Bensch I will study the impact of urbanization on wild birds. In this project I will specifically explore the effect of pollution on physiology (oxidative stress) and the possible molecular mechanisms involved in the adaptation of organisms to this anthropic ecosystem. For this aim we will use replicated pairs of urban/rural populations of birds in Sweden and in other European countries.
