Jean-Marc Lassance – new researcher

Hi! My name is Jean-Marc Lassance.

I am a biologist interested in sensory biology, evolutionary biology and genomics. Specifically, my research interests are centred on understanding the role of the chemosensory systems in the adaptation of animals to their environment, their contribution to fitness, and how variation in those systems affects behaviour and the evolution of mating systems and social behaviours. To this end, I use an interdisciplinary approach combining molecular techniques, phylogenetics and comparative genomics. In my research, I use non-classical insect and rodent models.

After a postdoc in the US, I am joining Christer Löfstedt and the Pheromone Group to contribute to ongoing investigations on the molecular bases of pheromone production and reception in moths and butterflies.

Linus Johansson – new IT-technician

Hi! My name is Linus Johansson and I recently started working as IT-technician at the Department of Biology. I will gladly help with any IT related question and do my best to help you with any IT-problem that may occur.

I am originally from Stockholm but moved to Helsingborg with my wife and dog in December because she wanted to be closer to her family. In my spare time, I try to go long walks with my dog, get to know Helsingborg and Skåne, and hang out with friends and family. I look forward to meet you all and if you have any questions, feel free to come by, I sit in the Ecology building.

Nicolas Nagloo – new postdoc

Hi! My name is Nicolas Nagloo, I am a neuroethologist with a strong interest in the neural basis of visual behaviour. I have previously focused on the processing of colour information at the retinal level in vertebrates and more recently in invertebrates.

I will now be joining David O’Carroll as a postdoc to investigate the effects of sub-lethal doses of imidacloprid (a neonicotinoid pesticide) on hoverflies and honeybees. Neonicotinoid pesticides are widely used in an agricultural setting but are known to negatively impact the foraging behaviour of several important pollinators. Here, we propose to use a virtual reality flight arena to examine the effects of imidacloprid on visually mediated flight behaviours which have a direct impact on foraging ability. We will combine this approach with a series of eletrophysiological experiments to identify how and which neural circuits are affected by imidacloprid and whether they may be responsible for observed changes in flight behaviours.

Laura Hildesheim – new PhD student

Hej! I am a new PhD candidate in the Evolutionary Ecology of Plant-Insect Interactions research group, and I will be working together with Øystein Opedal and Magne Friberg.

One of my research interests is the evolution of floral traits. In the next years, I will be using the tropical plant genus Dalechampia to study pollinator-driven variation in floral scent. I will be combining greenhouse studies, lab and field work.

In my free time, I enjoy exploring the nature around Lund, and I will get especially excited about a cool plant!

Debora Goedert – new postdoc

I am joining Dr. Erik Svenson’s group to work on the polymorphic damselflies, I. elegans. In this species, females present different colours, each of which also presents differences in correlated characteristics that affect their survival and reproduction. Within this system, I will be picking up from questions I have worked on during my PhD with frogs – which although very different than damselflies, are also organisms that spend their young life stages in the water and have a terrestrial adult stage. Specifically, I am interested in how organisms deal with the challenges of the very different environments they experience, and if the drastic morphological and physiological changes these organisms go through when becoming adults (i.e. metamorphosis) are an adaptation to allow organisms to simultaneously specialise into an aquatic and terrestrial environment, avoiding trade-offs of characteristics that could suit them in one habitat while being prejudicial in the other.

Although I consider myself a field biologist and hope to always and forever do research in the wild, I am taking a more ”perched” approach to answer my postdoc research questions. I’ll be looking at how the different life stages of the damselflies change in gene expression, as well as how this varies between sexes and across female types.

I am always up to help with field work, go on a bug/frog/bird watching walk, hear about other people’s research or even help brainstorm their statistics problem!

Protokoll från GUNs möte den 6/4 -20

Den 6 april hade grundutbildningsnämnden möte. Då diskuterades bland annat Corona med avseende på övergång till digitalisering, upphovsrätt till filmat material, modifiering av kurser, inställda föreläsningar, förlängning av vårterminen, avvikelserapport från kursplanen, ökat söktryck och  inställd examenshögtid och mastergrillning. Annat som diskuterades var bland annat ändringar av kursfordringar för masterprogrammen akvatisk ekologi och medicinsk biologi, ny schemamall, gemensam kursyta i Canvas, examinatorer, inställda kurser, ändring av kursfordringar för masterspåret  i växtbiologi, nedläggning av kurser i LADOK, att det är svårt att få moleklylärbiologiska projekt till kandidatexjobbskursen, försening av masterprojekt och kursutvärderingar.
