The Biology Doctoral Student Council (BDR) had a meeting on 10 November. Among other things, they discussed the meeting with the Head and Vice Head of the Department, the peer learning groups, and a new date for the PhD intro event.

Grundutbildningsnämnden hade möte den 17 november.
Då gick de bland annat igenom meddelanden från andra externa utbildningar. Medicinska fakulteten har använt Göteborgs universitets enkät för att undersöka studenternas situation under Covid-19-pandemin. Masterprogrammet i folkhälsovetenskap har gjort en pilotutvärdering. Utbildningsprogrammet första hjälpen till psykisk hälsa är implementerat på grundutbildningsnivå. De biomedicinska kandidat- och mastersprogrammen har nya utbildningsplaner och nytt regelverk för antagning, anstånd och studieuppehåll. Forum medicum ligger i fas med nybygget.
Terminsstarten har gått enligt planen och grundutbildningen har fått in mer pengar än de räknat med från betalstudenter.
Biologiska institutionen har klarat sig väl i verksamhetsdialogernas alla olika delar (grundutbildning, forskarutbildning och hela institutionen).
Information om att lanseringen av de nya webbsidorna skjutits fram till mitten av november. Troligen blir det inga öppna sidor i Canvas, LUBAS-informationen kompletteras av externwebben.
Grundutbildningen har fått etiskt tillstånd att genomföra fiske i olika former i utbildningssyfte.
Institutionen ska ha en policy för hur studentproblem hanteras.
BÖÖL har bytt namn till BUG.
Antagningssiffrorna för höstterminen 2020 var i paritet med tidigare år. Vi måste säga upp ett antal avtal för utlandsstudier. Avtalen skulle skrivits om i år, men har skjutits upp till 2021.
Studenterna har inte lärt känna varandra men håller ändå en positiv attityd. LUNAs informationmöte med nya studenter hölls senare än vanligt (10 dagar efter terminsstart) men fungerade bättre.
Det kan vara svårt att kombinera online- och campuförlagd undervisning så att alla ser och hör varandra.
Instruktionerna för masterexamensarbete i molekylärbiologi är färdiga.

As you probably have seen, we launched a new website last Friday the 13th. Everything went well despite the date, except that our internal websites disappeared due to a technical hitch. Fortunately, we have found them again but instead of doing the migration to the new system offline for three weeks, I have to do it online as soon as possible. Our internal websites are now fully functional, even if they still lack nice photos. Next year we will do a remake of our internal web pages to assure the accuracy of the content.
The new external website has not only a new look, but it also has a whole new structure and size. Duplicated content has been removed and all information will be in one place. In a system design for that type of information and target group. Hopefully, it will facilitate things for all, both visitors and content producers.
This means that all research groups, personal pages for personnel doing research, and pages for infrastructure have moved into Lund University’s research portal – LUCRIS.
Most of our educational information has moved to either Lund University’s central education pages or to the learning management system Canvas.
In the research portal, you may do a lot more things than you could on our website before. You can connect people, projects, infrastructures, activities, prizes and awards, as well as display a lot of other things. On the Staff Pages, you find descriptions of what you can do and how to do it. Next year, we will create good text examples for different types of content in LUCRIS.
We have moved the text and photos from your personal pages on our old website to your new personal pages in LUCRIS. Please, have a look at your page and see if anything is missing or must be updated. Just like on our old website, you are able to edit your personal page yourself. All our personnel doing research must have at least a description text in English and a photo. If you have a permanent position, you should also have a text in Swedish in LUCRIS.

If you have a link to your personal page in your email signature, please update it. The links to LUCRIS is not readable to humans. Make an HTML-link instead by using the chain ikon on your text and paste your LUCRIS-link. The link text may read as follow “My profile in Lund University’s research portal”.
Also, remember to remove any links to your old web pages in LUCAT. You do not need to add the new LUCRIS-link here. There already is a link to your page in the research portal auto-generated. You log into LUCAT with your LUCAT-ID.
If you want to create a new project, edit an old one, or make an old project invisible, you can do this by yourself too. How to manage projects on the Staff Pages.
Some projects are already added to LUCRIS. Are they still active and valid in the state they are in right now? Please, check if they are up to date.
If you find any errors that you cannot fix by yourself in LUCRIS or any errors on our new website, please, send them to your LUCRIS publisher who will collect the errors and send them to me.
We have reduced the number of web publishers and will instead appoint specialists to all pages. These specialists will assure that the content is correct, but they will not write texts, do updates in the system or manage any structures.
Our former web publishers have now become our new LUCRIS publishers. Although you are able to do much more by yourself in LUCRIS, you may still get help from your LUCRIS publisher. Just as before, the LUCRIS publisher will keep an eye out for new people in their research groups and contact them to get texts and photos into LUCRIS. The LUCRIS publisher will also look for new projects. If they find any, they will contact you and ask if you want to create a project in LUCRIS, either by yourself or with their help.
Right now, the LUCRIS publishers are looking over the projects already in LUCRIS to ensure they are up to date. You might get an email from one of them soon.

We have moved all personal pages belonging to personnel doing research to the research portal. You find your new profile page under the Researchers tab on the Department of Biology’s and your research group’s pages in the portal.
If you find that you are not connected to your research group or miss other people, please contact your Human Resources administrator. They help you connect people to the right research group. Find out who your Human Resources administrator is on our internal website.
With help of the central research portal support, we are working to connect publications to your research group. You can also connect your own publications manually to the research group.
We have not moved any projects from our old website to the research portal. You can create a project by yourself or get help from your LUCRIS publisher. Instructions on how to create a project on the Staff Pages.
I have archived the old websites in a zip-file and uploaded it to LU-BOX. Carin Jarl Sunesson has sent out an email with the link. If you have not got the mail, contact Inger Ekström and she will send you the link. After you have downloaded and un-zipped the file, find the file index.html, and double click it. This will open a new tab in your web browser and you are able to surf the old website on your own computer. If you have Windows and a problem un-zipping the file, use the software 7-Zip for unpacking.
Today, you cannot upload any images to your projects and profile page. Sometime at the beginning of next year, there will be a major upgrade to the research portal. The portal will get a new look and feel.

Den 22 oktober hade biologiska institutionens styrelse möte.
Styrelsen godtog förslagna ändringar i den allmänna studieplanen för forskarutbildningen. Förslaget ska skickas in till fakulteten för godkännande.
Styrelsen beslutade också att en administrativ tjänst på biologiska museet får flyttas över till institutionen.
En adjunkttjänst inom det naturvetenskapliga basåret kommer också att inrättas.
Jessica Abbott slutar som suppleant i styrelsen då hon har börjat som ställföreträdande prefekt. Magne Friberg kommer istället vara ersättare för både Nils Cronberg och Niklas Wahlberg.
Mats Hansson är utsedd till samordnare för brandfarlig vara.
De naturvetenskapliga biblioteken kommer att ligga direkt under fakulteten och biblioteksnämnderna kommer att ersättas med referensgrupper.
Det pågår en planering av ett fakultetsgemensamt mentorsprogram för biträdande universitetslektorer.
Vilka delar av fakulteten som flyttar till Brunnshög är inte klart än.
Enligt fakultetsbudgeten kommer GU få mer tillfälliga pengar, mindre pengar kommer att avsättas för resor och forskningen kommer att få ökad tilldelning. Med kostnadsökningar innebär det för forskningens del att resultatet blir +-0.
CEC kommer att omorganiseras och få en ny föreståndare.
Ledningsgruppen håller på att intervjua enheterna inför arbetet med den strategiska planen. Planen beräknas vara färdig i slutet av vårterminen.

De senaste styrelseprotokollen hade fallit mellan stolarna och vi har missat att lägga upp dem på bloggen. Här kommer dock en sammanfattning av maj och september protokollen samt ett per capsulum-beslut.
Tre personer har fått anställning på institutionen.
Joakim Nilsson gick igenom tertialbokslutet. Institutionen håller budgeten enligt planen och myndighetskapitalet har minskat. Det ligger nu under de 15% som är gränsen för tillåtet myndighetskapital. Muséets och fakulteten diskuterar hur museéts budget ska komma i balans till 2021. Utbildningen går bra och har fler betalstudenter än väntat. Internationaliseringen bör ses över.

Styrelsen beslöt att dubblera tjänsten som biträdande lektor i molekylär mikrobiologi med sex röster för och tre röster emot.
Tertialbokslutet diskuterades. Institutionen ligger enligt plan på ett underskott. Det är dock mindre än beräknat. Biologiska muséets resultat följer budget.
Jessica Abbott berättar om den strategiska planen, som ska innehålla områdena rekrytering, infrastruktur, samverkan, forskning, yngre forskares villkor, grundutbildning, forskarutbildning, administration och ekonomi, miljö och arbetsmiljö, informationsflöde och transparens. Styrelsen förväntas kunna ta ett beslut om planen på styrelsemötet i april 2021.
Styrelsen godkänner att prefekten tar fram en policy för hur samfinansiering av bidrag som inte är täckta med full overhead ska ske och för overhead-uttag för internationella postdoks.
Det finns ett förslag till ekonomisk förändring av Biologiska muséet. Det innebär att den administrativa tjänsten vid muséet lyfts över till institutionen och att muséet driftas som en infrastruktur.
Styrelsen tog ett beslut om att lägga fram ett förslag till nästa möte om att suppleanter i styrelsen inte ska vara personliga.
Hi, my name is Lena Magnusson and I recently started working as a financial administrator at the Department of Biology. I will gladly help you with all kinds of finance administrative related tasks and questions. Mostly I will take care of invoices, orders, expenses and travel bills.
I am originally from Uppsala, but moved to Malmö 1998 from Umeå, where I graduated from my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Economics 1994. For many years I worked at Coop with logistics and economy, but since 2016 I have been working at Lund university, which I like a lot.
In my spare time I like to be with my family, husband and our lovely six-year old daughter, be in our allotment garden, run orienteering, and if there is snow, I will put on my skis.

Hi! My name is Moritz Lürig and I’m a new postdoc in the Svensson lab.
I am an evolutionary ecologist broadly interested in the forces that shape phenotypic evolution, including species interactions, phenotypic plasticity and developmental effects.
Funded by two fellowships for the next three years, I will be investigating the adaptive landscape of sexual polymorphisms and sexual conflict in odonates (damselflies and dragonflies). For my research I am using high throughput computer vision to collect high dimensional phenotypic and to trace causality behind phenotypic variation within a phenomics framework.
Before coming to Lund I did a short term postdoc in Ole Seehausen’s lab at Eawag Kastanienbaum, where I supported investigations of the evolutionary past of Lake Victoria Cichlids using computer vision.
I did my PhD with Blake Matthews at Eawag Kastanienbaum and Jukka Jokela at ETH Zürich in Switzerland, where I conducted a series of experiments to explore the role of different types of species interactions within different levels of ecological organization and across a range of ecological contexts.
I am looking forward to interacting with you all, scientifically and personally – I’m typically up for a chat, beers, or a soccer match!

Den 19 oktober hade Biologibibliotekets styrgrupp möte.
Biblioteket har sagt upp sina tryckta prenumerationer av Nature och Science då det finns universitetsgemensamma prenumerationer på de elektroniska versionerna.
Efter ett inkommet förslag kommer biblioteket att köpa in delar av en fjärilsboksserie för de pengar som finns kvar i årets budget för inköp av tryckta böcker.
Styrgruppen gick igenom det preliminära bokslutet. På grund av ökande prenumerationspriser kommer kostnaden för tidskrifter att överskridas, men kostnaden för fjärrlån beräknas bli lägre. Driftskostnaderna kommer att hamna enligt budget.
I budgetförslaget för 2021 kommer troligen lönekostnader och kostnader och intäkter för fjärrlån att tas över av naturvetenskapliga fakulteten. Posten för köp av böckeroch prenumeration på elektroniska tidskrifter ökas medan posten för prenumerationer av tryckta tidskrifter minskas.
Bibliotekets styrgrupp diskuterade eventuellt borttagande av bibliotekets två egna tidskriftslistor. Frida Rosengren kommer att lyfta frågan till fakultetsnivå då samtliga bibliotek på naturvetenskapliga fakulteten har egna tidskriftslistor.
Under året har Biologibiblioteket utöver den vanliga verksamheten utvecklat stöd och information kring datahantering, utfört bibliometriska analyser för institutionen, köpt in en ny biblioteksdisk, köpt in nya publika datorer, öppnat en självbetjäningskiosk för utlån, gått över till utskriftssystemet Papercut, arbetat med webbsidan, arbetat med e-mediestatistik, arbetat med underhåll av boksamlingarna samt varit inblandade i den pågående Biblioteksutredningen och omorganiseringen av SciLib. Biblioteket har även genomfört anpassningar med anledning av COVID-19, bl.a. utveckling av digitala lärobjekt samt anpassning av biblioteket .
Biblioteket har börjat att prenumerera på databasen Birds of the World, i vilken det finns artbeskrivningar, utbredningskartor och rapporterade fynd.
Beslut om omorganisation av biblioteken vid naturvetenskapliga fakulteten tas den 4 november. Om förslaget går igenom kommer bibliotekspersonalen på alla fakultetens bibliotek att bli personalförtecknade direkt under fakulteten. En biobliotekschef för all bibliotekspersonal kommer då att tillsättas.
Universitetsbiblioteket har fått en ny överbibliotekarie som planerar att besöka alla Lunds universitets bibliotek.
Lunds universitet har ett nytt sökverktyg för Open Access publiceringsavtal.

The Biology doctoral student council (BDR) had a meeting on 8 September.
The PhD guest lecture this autumn is postponed due to COVID-19.
BDR has started a Slack group and invited all PhD students. In the beginning, they will focus on a statistics channel. They are planning to add more channels in the future.
There will eventually be an intro pizza meeting this autumn. BDR will check COVID-19 regulations if it is possible to arrange it.
BDR will meet with the Head and Assistant Head of the department in mid-October.
My name is Rickesh (Ricky) Patel. I’m a new postdoc in the Vision group working with Stanley Heinze on the neural basis of path integration, a vector navigation strategy, in bumblebees.
I completed my Ph.D. in Tom Cronin’s Lab at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (USA). During my dissertation, I worked with mantis shrimp, marine crustaceans that commonly inhabit burrows in their seafloor environments.
I investigated the navigational strategies these animals use to find their homes. By using a series of behavioural experiments that manipulated the positions of mantis shrimp in space and by altering potential sensory cues used for orientation, I showed that mantis shrimp use path integration reliant on the sun, celestial polarization patterns, and self-motion cues for orientation. I also found that mantis shrimp enacted stereotyped search patterns when path integration did not lead them directly home.
Finally, by comparing foraging paths in the presence and absence of a movable landmark placed near the burrow, I showed that mantis shrimp navigate using landmarks in parallel with their path integration system. My work uncovered the robust navigational toolkit mantis shrimp rely upon to find their homes while underwater.
I am looking forward to working with Stanley, his lab, and the rest of the Vision group at LU to investigate path integration behaviour in bumblebees and how this impressive behaviour is neurally mediated in the tiny central brains of these animals.
In the future, I hope to apply what I learn with bumblebees to comparatively investigate how mantis shrimp brains encode navigation behaviours similar to those of many insects, all while in an aquatic environment.
