Kalle Nilsson – new PhD student

Hello! I am Kalle Nilsson and I just started as a PhD student at the Department of Biology, in the Evolutionary Ecology unit. My main supervisor is Anna Runemark, my co-advisor is Magne Friberg and as such I will be a part of the Evolutionary Ecology of Plant-Insect Interactions-lab. This spring I defended my MSc thesis in animal ecology here at the department, so many of you may have seen me around before. My BSc is from University of Oslo, and I also lived in Oslo for the better part of a decade.

My doctoral project will focus on the ecology and genetic architecture of host plant adaptation in the fly Tephritis conura, and its two Cirsium host plants; C. oleraceum and C. heterophyllum. During the last ice age, a subset of T. conura populations underwent a host shift from its ancestral host plant C. heterophyllum to a novel host plant C. oleraceum. I aim to study how such a shift in niche affects the coding genetic landscape of divergence between host races and combine that with morphometric measurements to investigate the phenotypic effects of host adaptation, as well as of sympatry with the other host plant races. Additionally, I will use evolvability measurements to investigate how the bottleneck in population size associated with the host shift may affect the adaptive potential of the species.

Other broad biological interests are insects, which I have liked since childhood and I am very pleased to be able to do a PhD which revolves around them. Outside of biology I enjoy music and will happily discuss local rock bands with you.

Yun-Ting Jang – new PhD student

I am Yun-Ting and I am starting my PhD studies in theoretical ecology with Mikael Pontarp as my main supervisor. We are going to explore further about how different environmental, temporal and spatial factors can interact and shape those intriguing community patterns, both from ecological and evolutionary perspectives.

I am myself not a “pure blood” in the field of theoretical ecology. I did my Bachelor in both Life science and Energy Engineering back home in Taiwan, then I went to Tübingen, Germany for a master’s degree in Evolution and Ecology. For my thesis, I worked with GEOMAR and stayed in Hokkaido for 6 months, studying about how ocean temperature would affect the feeding preference of a dominant marine herbivore and the effect on primary producers—generally I was always trying, moving, and searching— and now here I am , in Lund, thinking that I have found a place that I could slow down a bit and start digging deeper into the immense knowledge underneath the surface. I am looking forward to it!

Besides doing science, I am a nature lover in everyday life, which means that I enjoy outdoor activities especially hiking. In the past year I had the chance to learn more about the ocean, so I would like to get in more touch with her as now she is always nearby. 😊

I am happy to introduce myself and hope that I can meet you in person sooner or later!

Anja Ödman – new librarian

I am a conservation biologist with a Master’s degree in Biology from Gothenburg University and a PhD in Environmental Science from Lund University. In 2014, I left academia and worked for three years at a municipality as their ecologist, but I soon realized that I missed working with knowledge and education. And so, I decided to enrol in the master’s program in Library and information science here in Lund. I graduated this spring, and since July, I have been employed as a librarian at the Biology library where I work with electronic journals, user statistics and teaching.

Jag är en disputerad naturvårdsbiolog med en magisterexamen i Biologi från Göteborgs Universitet och en doktorsexamen i Miljövetenskap från Lunds Universitet. År 2014 lämnade jag forskarvärlden för att under tre år arbeta praktiskt med naturvård som kommunekolog, men märkte snart att jag saknade att arbeta med kunskap och lärande. Jag bestämde mig då för att läsa masterprogrammet i Biblioteks- och informationsvetenskap här i Lund. Jag tog min examen nu i vår och sedan den 1 juli arbetar jag som bibliotekarie på Biologibiblioteket med ansvar för bland annat e-tidskrifter, analys av användningsstatistik och undervisning.

Summer meeting proves summer is not over yet

The sun was shining from a clear blue sky both days as GENECO held its summer meeting at Stiftsgården Åkersberg in Höör.

Around 40 persons had signed up for the meeting which started with a talk about genomic inference of inbreeding in pinnipeds by one of the invited speakers, Joseph Hoffman from Universität Bielefeld in Germany.

There were two other invited speakers, Alison Wright from the University of Sheffield and Henrik de Fine Licht from University of Copenhagen. Alison talked about sexual conflict in guppies.

Henrik’s talk was about zombie flies and the funguses which took them over .

Equality group recommends: new report on gender equality in academia

Allbright has released a new report about gender equality in academia in Sweden. Lund University placed 12 of 17 in terms of proportion female professors. Read the report (in Swedish) at Squarespace (pdf; 2MB; new window).

The Swedish Research Council’s online magazine Curie also published an article (in Swedish) about the report.
