Samantha Mellinger – new PhD student
Hi everyone!
My name is Samantha and I recently started my PhD under the supervision of Helena Westerdahl at the Department of Biology. I have a Master degree in evolutionary ecology from France. Some people will recognize me because I did my Master project here at the department and since then, I never left!
I am very interested in host-pathogen interactions and especially by a key component of vertebrate’s immune system, the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC). The MHC is fascinating and the aim of my project is to investigate gene expression between different MHC gene copies and in relation to disease such as avian malaria infection, in songbirds.
I’m looking forward to meet people I haven’t met before and for people I already know, see you around!

Kirsty Macleod – new postdoc
Hej! I am a new postdoc, joining Tobias Uller’s research group on a Marie Curie Fellowship. My research project aims to understand how the post-natal social environment mediates the effects of prenatal stress, which I will test using social lizards in Tasmania. The first two years of my position here will actually be undertaken at Simon Fraser University in Canada, and at the University of Tasmania in Australia – but I will be back in Lund full time in 2021! In the meantime, I’m here till the end of this month and am looking forward to interacting with everyone in the department during this stay.
Johan Kjellberg Jensen – new PhD
Hi all! My name is Johan K. Jensen and I have just started my PhD here at the Department of Biology and CEC, supervised by Caroline Isaksson. You might have seen me on the second floor for a year or two already, as I took both my BSc and MSc at the department and am quite fond of coffee!
My project focuses on the impact of urbanisation on organismal health and biodiversity, mainly looking at passerine birds. However, it is a broad study and includes insects as well as avian physiology, in addition to a lot of outreach and work with school children to learn about effects on their wellbeing from working with nature. The main theme is urban ecology, which has always been my biggest research interest. I hold a Bachelor’s in Biology and Master’s in Animal Ecology.
Outside of work I enjoy any and all activities outdoors, especially hiking. I’m also interested in art and literature, even when it is not biology related.
I’m looking forward to meet you all!
Kristina Corthals – new postdoc
Hi, I am Kristina Corthals and together with Elton Melo I am one of the new postdocs working with Anders Enjin.
I just finished my PhD at the University of Göttingen, where I studied the behavioural adaptations of both locomotion and courtship to light deprivation in Drosophila melanogaster. Since this involved spending a lot of time in small and dark rooms, I am very excited to now do some research that allows me to work in light conditions again. During my time in Lund I will try to understand the neuronal basis of hygrosensation in insects using single cell RNA sequencing of the antenna, to find possible candidate genes, patching of S2 cells and hopefully developing a fast and reliable behavioural assay to test for intact hygrosensation.
Elton Melo – new postdoc
What I work with
My name is Elton Melo, from Brazil. I recently joined Anders Enjin´s research group to investigate the neural basis of hygrosensation in Drosophila melanogaster. My post-doctoral research will involve developing microfluidic devices to study humidity receptor neurons signaling dynamics applying calcium/voltage imaging and whole-cell patch clamp electrophysiology.
My Background
I received my PhD in 2016 from the Federal University of Alagoas in Brazil. My thesis focused on developing different analysis methods applying capillary and microchip electrophoresis with fluorescence detection to determine neuroactive amino acids in microdialysis sample. During my PhD, I also spent a year at the University of Kansas where I had the opportunity to work with different microfabrication techniques.

Andrea Chiocchio – new postdoc
Hi,
My name is Andrea Chiocchio, from Italy, and since the 1st of February I have joined the Department of Biology of Lund University as postdoctoral researcher. I’ll work on butterfly and moths evolution in the Systematic Biology Group headed by Niklas Wahlberg, under the supervision of Jadranka Rota.
My research interests span from population, speciation and conservation genetics, to the phylogenetics and phylogeography of amphibians and lepidopterans. To date, my researches have been mainly focused on understanding why hotspots of genetic diversity are so hot. I have investigated the fine-scale genetic structure of several taxa inhabiting Mediterranean peninsulas, outlining the role of topographic complexity, Pleistocene climatic oscillations, and multiple secondary admixtures among previously differentiated gene pools, in the birth and maintenance of genetic diversity hotspots. Now I have the opportunity to move into a macro-evolutionary context. By the use of genomic data and phylogenetic comparative methods, I’ll investigate the adaptive radiation and the evolutionary history of all lepidopterans. In particular, I’m interested in reconstructing the timing of diversification of such an interesting group of living organisms.
So, I‘m looking forward to meeting you somewhere in the department, or elsewhere in Lund!

Mikael Pontarp is back
Hi!
My name is Mikael Pontarp and many of you know me as the previous PhD-student of Per, Jörgen, and Anders. I have spent the last five years away from Lund as a Postdoc. in Zurich Switzerland and I am now moving back, continuing my research at the unit of Evolutionary Ecology. My interests are broad, including the fundamental processes of ecology, evolution and biogeographical processes that underpin community and ecosystem structure and dynamics. Most of my research is theoretical in nature and I use eco-evolutionary simulation models to study how assembly processes across spatiotemporal scales affect community patterns. By exploring such models, I hope to formulate theory that facilitates our understanding of the generation and maintenance of species richness, functional trait diversity, and phylogenetic patterns. In addition, I hope to bridge part of the gap between theoretical and empirical research using Bayesian approaches (e.g. Approximate Bayesian Computation) that aim to fit complex simulation models and various community data.
I am currently in the start-up phase of two projects financed by The Swedish research council (VR) and The research council FORMAS, respectively. Both projects span my general interests listed above and the VR projects focus on linking assembly processes and phylobetadiversity patterns along environmental gradients in general and community patterns in Andean hummingbirds in particular. The FORMAS project is more applied with a focus on improving our understanding and prediction of observed pest-predator dynamics in agricultural landscapes.
I am looking forward to meeting all of you and discuss all things eco-evo, and more.
