Amra Hadzimesic – new HR-administrator
Hi everyone!
My name is Amra Hadzimesic and I recently started my position as HR-administrator at the Department of Biology. I will be substituting for Adam Niekrasz and will assist you regarding new employments, prolongation of employments and hourly paid employees. I will primarily be responsible for the units Evolutionary Ecology and MEMEG.
I was born in Bosnia and came to Sweden when I was seven years old. I grew up in Borås, a textile city in western Sweden. For those of you who haven’t been there, Borås has the honor of frequently being awarded as the rainiest city in Sweden. You can imagine it was a blast growing up there!
For the past seven years I’ve lived in Gothenburg where I also worked within the HR field. I have a degree in economics from Högskolan i Borås, but once I started working, I realized I clearly preferred humans over numbers. So, HR is a much better fit for me.
Last summer I decided to move south to the beautiful city of Lund. Even though it’s been six months now, I still feel like a newcomer and very much enjoy exploring the city and of course the rest of Skåne. If you have any suggestions where to go sightseeing, and what I absolutely should not miss here in Skåne, please let me know!

Simon Jacobsen Ellerstrand – new PhD student
Hello there!
I am Simon Jacobsen Ellerstrand, and I started my doctoral studies a year ago at MEMEG under the supervision of Bengt Hansson. Most of you have likely seen me around during the years leading up to my current position, as I have during this time finished my master’s and in parallel worked as a field assistant, a lab assistant, and bioinformatics assistant at the department and at CEC.
I am originally from Ängelholm in the northwestern region of Skåne. The journey to my current position has followed a long and winding path, from studies in practical metalworking in high school, to civil engineer studies at the faculty of engineering, and then finally starting my bachelor’s in biology at our department in 2014. Even then, becoming a researcher was not an obvious goal for me until I spent a very inspiring exchange semester in Svalbard.
My doctoral studies will focus on the evolutionary and ecological consequences of genetic sex determination in two very different organism groups. In Sylvioidea birds, I will continue the research done in Bengt’s lab group by studying the evolution of neo-sex chromosomes in relation to demography, sexual selection, and environmental adaptations. In haplodiploid bumblebees, I will set up a new study system for the group. I will try to characterise the sex determining csd gene and study how lowered diversity at this gene will affect and be affected by declining bumblebee populations. For my studies I will mainly work with whole genome sequencing data that is already available, or which I will collect myself in the field or from museum collections.
In my spare time I have many interests that come and go. Spending time outdoors for anything from a walk in the forest to multiple week-long hikes in the mountains are always in fashion. At this very moment, I am especially into winter bathing, wood carving, and Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.
Damandeep Kaur – new PhD student
Hi everyone! I am Damandeep Kaur, and I have joined Genetics of Sex Differences group as a PhD student under the supervision of Jessica Abbott.
I am originally from India, where I did my bachelor’s and master’s in Biotechnology. In 2014, I moved to Denmark to be with my husband and to carry out my second master’s in bioinformatics at Lund University. I moved to Lund in 2017. For my thesis project, I worked with clinical Whole Exome Sequencing data of 5 generations of 2 Finnish families affected by a familial stroke to find underlying genotype behind this familial embolic stroke.
Now, I am very excited to use my experience working with sequencing data to study the evolution of dosage compensation. In my project, I will try to manipulate the evolution of dosage compensation in real time using experimental evolution. I will investigate changes in gene expression and mechanistic basis of these changes over time with different sequencing technologies.
In my personal time, I like to cook, explore nature, and watch a range of web series. I’m looking forward to pursuing this interesting project and being part of the amazing work environment at Lund University.
