The Biology doctoral students council had a meeting on 27 January. Among other things, they discussed guest lecturer, meeting with the head of the department and the directors of study and BDR members.
This year GENECO’s winter meeting 2020 were held in a new place, Magle Concert Hall, the old Salvation Army Church behind Folkets hus in Lund. Around 40 participants gathered to attend the meeting.
When we arrived, Christina Rengefors, who had arranged the meeting, provided us with a brand-new water bottle. Thank you, this will come in handy.
After we had some coffee and sandwiches, the meeting started with a welcome talk by Bengt Hansson and Emily O’Connor.
When the practicalities were over, the PhD students David Stuart, Katja Kozjek, Alexander Hegg and Tony Rinaud gave a presentation each of their research. I am impressed by Tony who gave his talk with very short notice instead of Gróa Valgerdur Ingimundardottir, who unfortunately could not attend.
After a nice lunch, Veronica Sobrado and Christian Tellgren-Roth from The National Genomics Infrastructure (NGI) and SciLife talked about what you can get help with from these infrastructure facilities.
Then there was time for the most fascinating talk this day. Per Stenberg, from Umeå University, told us about airborne biodiversity. He and his colleagues have sequenced dna from glass fibre filters originally used for measuring radioactivity by the military. There are one filter sample from every week from the 50’s until today from around ten different places in Sweden. This is a great way to measure biodiversity over time.
The last lecturer was Ramiro Logares, from University of Barcelona, who gave his first talk in Lund since his PhD defence.
During the day everyone could write down questions at a flipchart. These questions were then answered and discussed by a panel consisted of Karin Rengefors, Ramiro Logares, Per Stenberg and Dag Ahrén. There were some great discussions between the panel and the audience.
As usual Torbjörn Säll ended the day with a little historical talk about genetics. Then we all went for dinner at Kulturen Restaurang & Konferens.
Thank you GENECO, all lecturers and especially Christina Rengefors who made this interesting and nice day possible!

Joakim Nilsson
The new year means major changes for us in the administration. After New Year, you will find most of us on the first floor of the Ecology House. Communication, HR, Finance, IT and department management will all be gathered along the north side of the house. At the far east you will find economy and the institutional management. Then comes IT and in the last part you find HR, communication and unit administration. The Prefectural Office’s current location on floor 2 of the Ecology House will become part of the CEC as of next year.
In connection with the physical transfer, we change among the responsibilities of HR and unit administration.
Katarina Nygren, Finance Administrator and Sara Bengtsson, Personnel Administrator take care of Molecular cell biology and Functional Zoology, and have their placement in the Biology House.
Annika Hecktor, Finance Administrator and Adam Niekrasz, Personnel Administrator manage MEMEG and Evolutionary Ecology, and they do so from the B160 corridor in the Ecology House.
Anna Lindkvist, Finance Administrator and Izabella Sec, Personnel Administrator take care of Biodiversity and Aquatic Ecology and they also have placement in the B160 corridor.
At our internal website you will also find who to contact for administrative help.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from us and well met 2020!
Joakim Nilsson
After 21 years and three months in Lund, I will move southwards after Christmas. After 1 year as “equipment”, 4 years as research fellow (VR forskarassistent), 6 years as VR Researcher (rådsforskare) and over 12 years as professor, including 6 years as Pro Dean and half a year as deputy Head of Department, I felt it was time to try something new.
I was offered and accepted the job as director of research grants, at HFSPO (Human Frontiers Science Program Organization) in Strasbourg, where I have the chance to support curiosity-driven research in the Life Sciences, which I will start in January. I am looking forward to a new job, and to seeing science from a different perspective. And then, Strasbourg has good food, good wines and good weather!
However, just to be clear: I have always enjoyed and do still enjoy working at Lund University. The Lund Vision Group has been a phantastically inspiring research environment with wonderful colleagues over all these years, teaching curious new students has always been a lot of fun, and 10 years ago, the foundation of the Department of Biology, has facilitated collaborations and interaction with many more of you! Thanks to everybody in Biology, specifically the patient administrators, the highly skilled and always helpful technicians, the great PhD-students and post-docs! I will miss you, and therefore, I have kept the door open and taken leave of absence, so there is a chance I will be back!
Thanks for the farewell words, flowers and wine!
All the best to all of you!
Almut
Hi! My name is Izabella Sec and I recently started working as HR Administrator at the Department of Biology. I will be your point of contact when it comes to HR related questions. The units I will take care of are Aquatic Ecology and Biodiversity.
I graduated from the Human Resources Management Program at Kristianstad University in 2017. Since then I have been working within the field of Learning & Development at an industrial company.
Most of my non-working time I spend together with friends and family. I love to travel and do enjoy running and cycling.
Please feel free to visit me at the Ecology Building. I am looking forward to
meet you!
