Funding available for gender equality and equal opportunities initiatives
Promoting gender equality and equal opportunities and combating discrimination at Lund University
The management group for gender equality and equal opportunities extends an annual invitation to employees and students at Lund University to apply for funding for initiatives aimed at moving gender equality and equal opportunities issues forward and combating discrimination at Lund University.
The management group for gender equality and equal opportunities will allocate a maximum of SEK 1 million. Usually, a sum up to SEK 50 000 to 100 000 is allocated for each application.
The management group particularly welcomes applications in line with Lund University’s mission on gender mainstreaming. The management group also encourages applications with an intersectional perspective, which are focused on initiatives and reviews that combine several different areas within equal opportunities, if possible across several faculties. Applications concerning initiatives that contribute to the University’s systematic prevention work against discrimination (SFAD) are welcomed.
Decisions on the allocation of funding will be taken by the Vice-Chancellor in April 2019, following preparation by a working group from the management group. The deadline for applications is 7 February 2019. The call for applications takes place every year in November. Questions about applications can be addressed to the management group via email: jol@pers.lu.se
Examples of successful applications
Some of the initiatives that received funding previous years are: Seminar series in norm-critical education (HT), Computer engineering for everyone (LTH), IDAHOT – seminar day (HBTQ-LU/LTH), workshops for promoting equality and diversity at LUCSUS, Collaborative Toolbox towards diversity and antiracism in academia (department for gender studies).

Equality group recommends: Petition against binary definition of sex

The United States is currently planning to introduce a proposal to enforce a binary definition of sex in the country. Under the proposal, a person will be assigned to a given sex based on genital shape, regardless of whether they have an intersex phenotype or not and regardless of their later gender preference. This proposal has no basis in science: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-07238-8
If you would like to protest the proposal, you can sign a petition here: https://not-binary.org/statement/
New email look for blog posts
In the communication audit this spring, there were some confusion about emails coming from our blog and our newsletter. People had a hard time to distinguish between the different emails. To make this easier, I have now changed the design of the (mer …)
Why Pub Einar?

Every Friday an email is sent out to everybody on the Biology department mailing list, saying that beer is available for after work “discussions”. Sometimes the event is called the Friday Pub, but for many years and still now (mer …)
Annika Hecktor – new financial administrator
Hi, I´m Annika Hecktor and I´ve just started my work as a financial administrator at the Department of Biology.
My desk will be in the Prefect Office for the first weeks and after that, you will find me somewhere in the corridors of Evolutionary ecology.
I´ve studied economics at the University of Lund, and now I´ve been working several years at Lunds kommun, with administration in a school in Genarp with children 6-15 years, mostly with economy and student registration.
Nature and animals are important things in my life. We have a bunch of dogs (Labradors) and I walk them, I train them, I run them in competitions and I use them as picking up dogs at bird shoots. I also shoot myself, but I prefer clay pigeons 😊. I spend many of my vacation days in the autumn outside, with my dogs and friends.
I live right outside Veberöd in a house high up at Romeleåsen, where deer live and our gravel road ends… And If you walk “Skåneleden” west of Veberöd – a trail with orange markings – you will pass our house!
Himma Bakam – new PhD student
I am a new PhD student under the supervision of Professors Susanne Åkesson and Åke Lindström. My research will focus on Winter Ecology and Movements of Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica. My research questions cover aspects of migration and connectivity of the swallows breeding in Europe and wintering in western and southern sub-saharan Africa.
I hold a Bachelors of Technology degree in Applied Zoology from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University and later earned a Masters degree in Conservation Biology from the A. P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute, University of Jos, all in Nigeria.
I am getting to know everyone and I am looking forward to meeting those I am yet to, especially connecting to what each one is doing. I will be glad to chat with you on my research goal, and also learn and share from your experiences. I gradually like the coffee since I do not add much milk now.
See you around!
Patrik Karell – guest researcher at MEEL and EvolEco
Hi, My name is Patrik Karell and I am an evolutionary ecologist from Finland. In August I brought my family with me and came to Lund University to work as a guest researcher here for a year. My aim is to collaborate with Staffan Bensch lab and Jan-Åke Nilsson’s lab within my Academy of Finland research fellowship project on tawny owls, colour polymorphism and adaptations to climate change.
Here in Lund we will together with postdoc Chiara Morosinotto focus mainly on lab work on tawny owl telomere dynamics and on development and implementation of a protocol to study ecological energetics and immunology of tawny owls under controlled conditions.
I am excited to be here in Lund to meet new people and learn more about what is going on here! …och jag är Finlandssvensk så svenska funkar bra!
See you around,
Patrik
Kristaps Sokolovskis – new PhD student
I am a freshly recruited PhD student in the “Staffan Bensch Team”. I will join an ongoing project investigating how genes control songbird migration. In field, we will use smallest tracking devices available (geolocators) to record willow warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus) seasonal flights. In lab and office, we will continue using genetic and genomic tools to link phenotype and genotype.
I hold a MSc degree in Evol Biol from Uppsala University and a substantial experience of work with different birds in the wild. On top of a strong interest in avian ecology and life histories, I want to use molecular tools to tackle biologically relevant questions. Therefore, I am extremely happy to have found my dream project here in Lund!
Work and hobbies for me largely overlap as exploration and all sorts of outdoorsy activities is what I enjoy doing the most anyway.
I drink a lot of coffee so we will surely meet in the fika room.
Alternatively, come to board game night every Wednesday at 17:30 (2nd floor kitchen Ecol Building) and we can get to know each other while playing Settlers
of Catan!
P.S. I am also looking for people to go to metal concerts together. Feel free to approach me with any such suggestions 24/7 😊
