A new hope – BLAM once again in real life

The lecture hall was full of an expectant audience.

Last Wednesday and Thursday it was once again time for the Biology in Lund Annual Meeting (BLAM). One of the nicest events at the department and a great opportunity to meet people across units and research groups

The plenary speaker Maria José Ruiz López started with a talk about ”Conservation and host-parasite interactions”.

BLAM is a departmental conference arranged by our PhD students each year. Or nearly every year more exactly, due to the pandemic. I think everybody had longed for this real-life meeting since 2019 when the last meeting on-site was held.

The second plenary speaker, Felipe Cava, talked about ”D-amino acids shape the microbial biodiversity”.

All talks, except two invited plenary lectures, are done by the PhD students. They also make all the posters and are the host of the meeting. BLAM 2022 organising committee consisted of Sara Winterfeldt, Dániel Tájmel, Karla Iveth Aguilera Campos, Katie Laschanzky and Ashish Ashish. They had done an amazing job.

The only thing I can complain about is the weather. In former years it used to be great weather during BLAM and the breaks were usually enjoyed outside. Not this year, the rain did not make it tempting to go outside at all.

Besides organising the meeting, Ashish Ashish also gave a talk.

The talks and posters were of an extremely high quality, which made it a hard decision for the prize committee to decide who were the winner of the prizes for best talk, best flash talk and best poster.

The chandelier at Grand Hotel is amazing, like the sound level when around 125 happy people are talking.

At the grand dinner at Grand Hotel Johan Kjellberg Jensen was announced the winner of the talk, Susana Garcia Dominguez the winner of the flash talks and Etka Yapar was the winner of the best poster. The prize money is 10 000 SEK each for the talk and poster winners and 5 000 SEK for the flash talk winner. The money should be spent on travel or literature in accordance with the winners’ PhD projects.

BLAM is a lot more than just talks and posters. The social bit is as important.

Last night I went home with happy voices ringing in my ears and a good feeling in my body. And to quote Johannes Rousk “There is a new hope when we meet at BLAM”.

Not forgetting the food. Food is also important.

Once again, thanks to the organising committee for their splendid job and thanks to all the speakers and poster makers.

But most important of all is having a good time.

A meeting with real people

Nice discussions during the coffee break.

Yesterday GENECO had their winter meeting at Kulturen. This was the first meeting in real life since the pandemic started. And that showed. People really liked to get together and talk. During the dinner, it was hard to even hear oneself talk from time to time.

An old tapestry. Photo.
The beautiful tapestry in the conference was a big contrast to the modern meeting equipment.

GENECO is a graduate research school in genomic ecology, where PhD students from different universities come together and learn to understand genomic techniques and applications and communicate research ideas among other things.

Emily O’Connor introduced the next speaker.

Unfortunately, I was not able to make it to the meeting in the morning, which included one guest lecture by Petra Korlevic from Wellcome Sanger Institute, in Great Brittain, and two talks by the PhD students Hanna Bensch and Ida Krogsgaard Svendsen, both from Linnaeus University.

Anja Mezger described SciLifeLab’s methods.

After lunch and a streamed Thursday seminar, the invited lecturer Anja Mezger from National Genomics Infrastructure in Stockholm, talked about SciLifeLab equipment and what analysis they do. Qinyang Li, PhD student in Lund, followed with a talk about his PhD project about multicellularity.

How and why does multicellularity arise? Qinyang Li gave some answers.

The next talk was about wolfs in Sweden and their inbreeding. Mikael Åkesson, from the Swedish University of Agriculture Sciences in Grimsö, told us how they use the genomic technique SNPs in their monitoring of wolfs.

After the coffee break Danilo Di Leo, PhD student at Linneaus University, talked about a way to analyse big data sources and Zachary Nolen, PhD student at Lund University, ended with a talk about his work with genetic diversity of blue-winged butterflies.

Zachary Nolen let us know more about the impact of land-use changes on butterflies.

The closing dinner was at Kulturen’s restaurant, and the food served was either roster or portabello confit depending on food preferences. I left with a full stomach and a head full of voices and thoughts.

Torbjörn Säll held his last speech at a GENECO meeting. He will soon retire.

Another way to view a speaker.

It was a pleasant and strange feeling to be at an IRL meeting again, but it was also tiring. It will take some time to get used to a normal life. Thanks to the organisers and GENECO for letting me participate.

Amra Hadzimesic – new HR-administrator

Portrait of Amra Hadzimesic.Photo.

Hi everyone!

My name is Amra Hadzimesic and I recently started my position as HR-administrator at the Department of Biology. I will be substituting for Adam Niekrasz and will assist you regarding new employments, prolongation of employments and hourly paid employees. I will primarily be responsible for the units Evolutionary Ecology and MEMEG.

I was born in Bosnia and came to Sweden when I was seven years old. I grew up in Borås, a textile city in western Sweden. For those of you who haven’t been there, Borås has the honor of frequently being awarded as the rainiest city in Sweden. You can imagine it was a blast growing up there!
For the past seven years I’ve lived in Gothenburg where I also worked within the HR field. I have a degree in economics from Högskolan i Borås, but once I started working, I realized I clearly preferred humans over numbers. So, HR is a much better fit for me.

Last summer I decided to move south to the beautiful city of Lund. Even though it’s been six months now, I still feel like a newcomer and very much enjoy exploring the city and of course the rest of Skåne. If you have any suggestions where to go sightseeing, and what I absolutely should not miss here in Skåne, please let me know!
